-The Draconic-
Children of the Comet
“Vibrance filled the sky, but it held no light to the elegance that emerged from that egg.”
The Origin
Near the beginning of the world, the creation of mortals had just completed; they walked the world without troubles. The Gods worked on creating creatures to populate the vast landscapes. Ancients had yet to start growing, illness had yet to develop, murder wasn’t a concept. One night, mortals of all kinds peered up at the sky to see a comet with a brilliant blue trail that painted the starful heavens. As day came, that comet remained there, visible for all to see despite the similarly blue hues surrounding it. Over the course of the next month, this comet seemed to grow larger, filling the sky and drowning out the blacks of night and the blues of day.One night, the blues turned into fiery reds and oranges as the world heated up the mortals' beloved comet while it fell to the lands below. Its impact quaked the planet, making a continent split apart, transforming into two that seemed to drift away from each other. Water filled the cracks between these masses, forming an ocean. Within the depths of this formed sea, the fallen comet sat submerged.
Mortals, aided by the magics of Gods, reformed what cities had been shattered due to the impact. It took no time at all for them to heal what had been broken. Though, a sect of Water Elementalists found themselves staring at the sea, curious about the fallen comet. Together, they strided forth, pushing the waters around them as they walked through the depths, light becoming lacking. Without aim, they meandered the darkness, their only path being whatever cliff was steepest. Hours passed before they saw a glimmer of blue light.
Rising to the surface, the group found themselves holding a stone structure, akin to a geode, with cracks of electric blue wrapping around it. It was the same hue of the old comet’s trail. Years would pass as those Elementalists sat around the geode, watching it with interest, their tools unable to crack its outer shell. A whole decade, to the day, after the comet struck the world, the structure cracked open. Staring back at mages was a blue eye. The first Dragon.
The Blessing
The Gods recognized the nature of the creature that had fallen. It had formed from a rift in the Mana Stream and had turned solid as it fell to the realm. As they watched, they noted the creature held several natural magical abilities. It could speak in the minds of those it was around and could fly without regard for its ever growing body. Much akin to the mortals they had given their blessings to, they figured this creature could hold similar abilities. They all stood before the first Dragon, each one willing forth their mana before they touched the young creature. A blessing from each God had been bestowed upon the Dragon.Blessings became customary with each newly born being of Draconic origin. While few gained the direct touch of a God, like the First had, they were blessed nonetheless. Not a single one had ever been made without a gift given. The Gods all took their turns claiming a draconic once it was born, meaning none would ever be the same as their parents. Though, some would end up with blessings that were similar, or the same, as ones gifted to others. Blessings always matched the God they came from and such a gift would cause the naturally blue scales of the Draconic creatures to shift, their bodies always growing to fit their new power.
The Hierarchy
The first Dragon remains as the most powerful to have been born, its strength unmatched by any other of the Hierarchy. Draconic creatures tend to be grouped into different categories based on the characteristics they display when they are born. It’s believed this is due to the constant ebb of the Mana Stream around a Draconic’s egg as well as the category it’s parent held. A draconic being can only birth a draconic within one level of them. Eggs generally will form into the same level as the parent, or, more commonly, one lower. Rarely, however, an egg will form into a draconic being one higher than its parent. The Drake - Rare
The lowest on the draconic rungs. Drakes are lizard-like creatures with four legs and no wings. While they’re the weakest of them all, their scales are still as tough as chainmail and their skin is leather-like. Blessings given to Drakes are the weakest of all Draconic, yet they still pose a significant threat. The smallest one is about twice the size of a horse. Unlike the rest of their kin, Drakes are notably unable to fly, though they are still capable of telepathic communication.
The Wyvern - Epic
Above the Drake rests the flightful Wyvern, a creature with two back legs and a set of wings that double as their front legs. Their scales are akin to plate armor and their size tends to let them shrug off normal wounds. The average Wyvern is as large as a house and is easily capable of destroying one. Blessings granted to these creatures are stronger than even the strongest Drake, especially when paired with their ability to fly at will. Despite being the second lowest, they are known to be powerful creatures.
The Wyrm - Legendary
Oddly enough, Wyrms are both without any limbs or wings, making them rely on their blessing and flight. In fact, Wyms are known for their skills of weaving through the air and are almost never seen upon the ground as they can effortlessly hover in place. Each one is paired with a powerful blessing due to how close they are to being true Dragons. The scales of a Wyrm are stronger than any mortal-made plate armor and often require special weapons to pierce through them. Commonly, Wyrms are hundreds of feet long.
The Dragon - Legendary
The rarest of them all, Dragons are known to look similar to Drakes as they hold a set of four legs, though their backs display at least one pair of wings. This is the base of all Dragons, though extra limbs aren’t uncommon among their kind. At the very least, their scales are thought to be near impenetrable, almost requiring Godly or Ancient intervention to break through them and deal true damage to one of these beasts. In addition to this, no other Draconic holds the same strength of blessing to a Dragon as even the weakest of them are stronger than the most powerful Wyrm. While the size of most is often compared to a flying mountain, Dragons are known to shapeshift, altering themselves to fit whatever they must do. Few are ever born as most Dragons end up birthing Wyrms.
The Corrupt
The scourge of the Gods, the Ancients, found themselves unable to leave the Draconic alone. Directly due to the Blessings placed upon Draconic creatures, Ancients were able to manipulate this energy and transform them into Corrupt variations. The minds of these beings altered from their good, or neutral ways to destructive mannerisms. Fortunately, however, these corrupt creatures lose their ability to reproduce. Though, the hierarchy is maintained. The Hydra - Rare
The corrupt form of a Drake, these creatures maintain their flightless bodies and gain no extra strength in their scales. Instead, they tend to look like an average Drake, at first, only having minor signs of corruption. Inevitably, their destructive tendencies will catch up to them, usually leading to their head being cut off. Should such happen, two more will swiftly grow to replace the lost one. More feral Hydras have been known to gnaw off their own heads or necks to force new ones to grow. In addition to this, their blood now boils, the corruption within causing it to erode and destroy whatever it touches. Killing a Hydra is an extraordinarily difficult task due to this.
The Amphiptere - Epic
When corrupted, a Wyvern’s back legs either die and fall off, or meld with their new body, leaving only their wings intact. So, these creatures tend to crawl around, pulling their massive bodies along. Though, they now resort to flying in the sky to dive down at their prey. The wings of such creatures are enhanced by the corruption brimming within them. When one flies, the world around them becomes tainted by an Ancient’s power. Such is commonly known to make livestock die when an Amphiptere flies above them. Blessings are additionally able to spread corruption.
The Basilisk - Legendary
Trading their ability to fly for an affinity for the depths of caves and bodies of water. Each one loses the need to breathe, letting them thrive in their chosen place for as long as they wish. While their Blessing also fades a bit, the eyes of a Basilisk become supremely deadly. Should one look at the face of one of these corrupt creatures for a moment too long, they’d find their body turning into stone. Curing such petrification is a rather difficult task all on its own as it requires the blood of a Basilisk.
The Dratite - Legendary
Dratites are the rarest of all Draconic as corrupting a Dragon is an extraordinarily difficult task. In fact, most tend to be Dragons that have risen from the dead. The body of a Dratite will always take on a more undead appearance and tend to keep their Blessing. However, they are uniquely given the strongest ability present in all Ancients. They can steal power from Gods, making them akin to mini-Ancients. It’s said a particularly powerful Dratite could even herald a new magic.
