Creature Lore: Leviathans - Ztrog - 07-22-2024 Leviathans - Rulers of the Deep
Background
Just when the seas could be no more cruel than what the first makings have dictated, Shai’dar, an ancient of the Sea had other plans. On a day of blackened skies, in defiance of all that was holy, they would see to the creation of the truest abominations of the oceanic depths. Through violence and dark powers the first Leviathan was born into creations, The Elder. The Ancient which had created them fiendishly imbued them with inherent instructions: unleash chaos, bloodshed and violence - destroy all that they could. Thus a new truly malevolent being was unleashed onto the world's ocean depths as a whole, all for the cause of death and carnage by the spawn of the Ancient. Description
The Leviathans are truly beings of colossal size; they are the worst fears of sailors whilst on the open sea. Though their bodies are rarely spotted it is known they look roughly like that of a cuttlefish with their bodies being made of squishy flesh with patches of hardened carapace. Their bodies have tentacles, those with suckers and fangs more suited for grasping and crushing objects and prey. They also have more tendril-like appendages that are more needle-like in shape and more suited for piercing through prey and debris that may pollute the sea bed. Their tentacles themselves often number in the dozens but depending on the age of the Leviathan can vary in even higher quantities. The length of the Leviathan’s bodies is equivalent to roughly 25% of the length of their tentacles, which can vary in size. Beneath the wriggling mass of tentacles of this beast would be the maw of this colossal monster. The mouth of the monster would be filled with hundreds of rows of teeth, all being razor sharp and strong enough to tear through the most hardened of steel. The eyes of these beasts are one of their most defining features as they have two sets of eyes holding three eyes each. These six eyes have been claimed to hold some of the most unrivaled perceptions in all of Xolinayr. They pierce through the waters of the open seas with an otherworldly bright blue glow. Size
The true size of any Leviathan is more challenging to pinpoint. As the creatures are effectively immortal and continue to grow the longer they live. A hatchling Leviathan would be nearly 100 feet in size. An adult being estimated at 600 feet, though the older they become the bigger in scale they grow. Traits and Abilities
Leviathan can control all of its tendrils and tentacles all at once seamlessly. They often stay far below the depths of the ocean blue as they use their appendages to attack their prey or even boats above. Each appendage is supremely strong, able to crush through even the densest of woods easily. It has been a spoken tale among seamen of the sight of the tentacles of a Leviathan wrapping around a naval ship and crushing it like a ball of paper, only to bring it to the depths. These beasts also hold the incredible terrifying power to control the very seas with pure ease. Leviathans have the natural ability to use Elementalism due to stealing the magic for themselves upon their very creation. However, it is said that one, and only one of these titanic sea beasts has the power to dominate mortals' minds. They however have not been seen within the world in countless ages. If a mortal being were to consume the flesh of a Leviathan living or dead they would begin to undergo a mental psychosis. Their perception of reality being warped as the flesh is processed by their bodies, before being controlled by the very Leviathan they had consumed. This is due to the fact that even once a Leviathan’s body has been slain it is not truly dead. Their very essence is imprinted onto the world and the seas, and in time they will reform at the seafloor hundreds of years after their death.. In this reincarnated state, they begin life once more as a hatchling, as no Leviathan is truly capable of reproducing. Lifespan
These creatures do not hold a maximum life span and continue to grow as they age. The lifespan of any Leviathan is potentially limitless and thus they are considered immortal even by elven standards. Noted they are only immortal in the realm of aging and can be slain by mortal races, hard as it may be. Redlines
